Moving upmarket
Tourism, moving upmarket
The old day-tripper economy is giving way to higher-value visitors: cruise passengers, wine travelers, and Michelin diners.
Cruise, wine, and dining each out-earn the entire racing calendar many times over.
963,647cruise passengers through Ensenada by Q3 2025, up ~36% year on year

Four higher-value layers
- Cruise (Ensenada): 949,321 passengers in 2024, and already 963,647 through Q3 2025, up about 36%. Ensenada is Mexico's 3rd-busiest cruise port, with a Carnival-backed cruise village in development.
- Wine (Valle de Guadalupe): about $180 million a year in wine-tourism impact (roughly 3.5 billion pesos, SECTUR), with 150+ wineries and 10,500+ jobs. Baja produces around 70% of all Mexican wine and draws 800,000 to 1 million visitors a year.
- Fine dining is now a destination in itself. Baja entered the Michelin Guide in 2024; the Valle and Ensenada hold Michelin stars (Animalón), a Green Star (Lunario), and a World's 50 Best restaurant (Fauna), built on the homegrown "Baja Med" movement.
- Boutique lodging followed the food. Wine-country hotels such as Banyan Tree Veya, El Cielo, and Bruma run roughly $300 to $600+ a night, a high-value market that barely existed a decade ago.
- Medical tourism and a large expat community. Nearly 59% of the state's foreign visitors come from the US, feeding a year-round market for medical services, real estate, and retirement living along the coast.
- Where it is headed. Cruise, Michelin-caliber dining, wine country, and medical tourism are set to keep replacing day-tripper volume with higher-spend visitors, alongside a growing binational expat market that anchors real estate and services along the coast year-round.
